Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) LTS Review

As we all know by now im a Linux user so i couldent wait to try out the newly released Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. I was able to get my hands on a CD .ISO... okay well heres my thoughts on the new Ubuntu. Okay it has had some major improvements like an improved compiz etc. well heres the good points of 8.04

*GTK 2.X theme engines: yes the new Gnome 2.22 has the Murrine engine thats really popular on http://gnome-look.org and of course includes Clearlooks and the defaul engines.

*Firefox 3 Beta 5: Yes Firefox 3 Beta 5 has sooo many features i absolutely love like the add-ons and the smart bookmarks which neatly organize your bookmarked sites... and the Adress Bar now has a star on the side to bookmark the page your on which is really usefull... and the drop-down bar when you type in a keyword to a site you have recently visited..... and finally the seucrity and bug fixes by far firefox 3 beta 5 has had less crashes than 2 and is very secure.

*Compiz-Fusion: The updated compiz-fusion has more plug-ins and more effects than ever and most of them are actually useful like the plug-in that shows the mouse location.. very useful for screen captures.

*Updated Software: the new ubuntu adds much more software to its already HUGE collections of software it has via synaptic.. a couple i liked were the addition of AWN (Avant-Window-Navigator) which is a dock and screenlets which are desktop widgets both peices of software are very popular... and of course the updated classic software like pidgin and thunderbird

*New Wallpaper: Okay this is just a little thing i liked about 8.04 was the really cool heron wallpaper which blends perfectly into the desktop

Well i have covered the good points now for the down points

*Pulseaudio: Yeah this confuses me a little see my system (i386) doesnt need pulseaudio but what annoyed me is that it wouldent allow you to use a media player (ex. Banshee) and watch flash in a browser at the same time... but for people who want both and need pulseaudio you need libflashsupport which makes your browser VERY VERY unstable... i ended up just disabling it

*Flash: As usual the flash player from ubtunu sucks.. but dont fear the adobe tar.gz package works like a charm

*Banshee: aparently the new Banshee Audio player in ubuntu crashes more than the one in 7.10 which is a minor problem but annoying still

*Default Theme: yes the default theme for ubutnu has been recycled and im annoyed i think ubutnu needs a new face.. something a little more original.. oh and the orange is just ugly

Well there is my review of ubutnu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) LTS

Fedora 9 Gnome 2.22 Beta Review

Okay i have finished up with the beta and i have found some key features i like about it and what i absolutely HATE

Things that were improved / liked

~Gnome 2.22: this was a very nice desktop and i love it

~Screen resolution: this is always very important to me that i have needed and in the Ubuntu 8.04 Beta (my review coming soon) the screen res was not right and i could only use the desktop without it having some crazy glitch was at a very low resolution but in fedora 9 Beta it worked like a charm

~Firefox 3 beta: this browser is alot better than its predecessor firefox 2 in the fact that it has "smart bookmarking" this cool feature will let you look into folders to see the documents in there and will also give you a "smart bookmarks" folder in which all of your bookmarks stay.. it tidys up the browser alot. and the address bar in it acts like the Google search bar where you type in a word that you use / search frequently and it will show that with the title and thumbnail of the site

~Add/Remove programs: i absolutely love the new add/remove programs because it does make you load all the 2000 + packages at startup but it gives you the choice of searching for a specific package or goto a tab with specific software like "internet" and it'll come up with all the internet software.. which somewhat reminds me of the Ubuntu add/remove programs

Those were the major improvements that were really standing out to me

Things that were bad or just plain horrible

~Flash player: like i said in my last post i was hoping that they would replace the button you need to press to get flash working... it interferes ALOT! especially when you go to the youtube website and the bar at top that has the "videos being watched now" and you cant see it but a big button that makes you press it to start the flash for it and once you have clicked it well it loads but it is EXTREMELY SLOW and very annoying and when i went to watch a video it wouldn't even play the video

~Login screen: I was really hoping they would keep the Fedora 8 login but no they replace that with a bland login screen in which you click on the user you want and it has this somewhat sluggish animation that makes it look horrible and for the background they give you the standard fedora wallpaper which makes the whole thing together look horrible and very unappealing to anyone

~Software installer: the new installer for .rpm packages is really not good at all with it not giving you any choice to install the package at all but it just automatically installs it. it also has a very bland GUI to it as well with just a blank box with some sliders and a blank icon and the only thing it tells you is "[insert .rpm here] is finished installing... making it much worse than the one in fedora 8

Well theres what i think of Fedora 9 Beta Gnome... so if you have your own opinions tell me or tell me your review of the Fedora 9 Beta KDE (cause im a Gnome user myself) just post it in the comments

Fedora 9 Beta

So now that its spring the people at fedora released there Fedora 9 Beta... right now im just hoping it will be better than the alpha especially with flash.. in the alpha they had this weird play button to access flash like youtube etc. and it was really a BAD idea... may have been a good concept but when you actually try it.. its bad. im also looking forward to seeing the Gnome 2.22 Environment in fedora 9 as well. another thing and i know I've already said this but PLEASE PLEASE give me a better flash player in fedora 9... fedora 8 hates ustream and youtube and crashes every 4 videos..... well I'll continue on when i finish downloading the fedora 9 Beta live CD and burn it...
